Serve with our beef enchiladas and Mexican style rice! Ingredients: 1 package dry pinto beans 1 quart water 1 large sweet yellow onion, chopped 3 large garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup avocado oil 1 quart beef broth 2 tomato bouillon cubes 2 additional cups water Directions: Rinse and sort the dried beans. Place in large kettle with 4 cups water. Bring to boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to soak for an hour. Drain the beans. Place avocado oil in the pan and sauté the onions and garlic until caramelized. Add the beans, tomato bouillon and 1 quart of beef broth. Simmer until tender. If the beans appear to be drying out, add additional water. Once the beans are tender, remove from heat and mash. Makes approximately 6 servings. Related Projects:

Ingredients: 2 3/4 cups cake flour 3/4 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder 2 cups sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 sticks butter, diced, at room temperature 1 cup whole or low-fat milk 4 large eggs 2 large egg whites 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat two 8 inch cake pans with cooking spray. Dust with flour. Shift the dry ingredients together into the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the butter and 1/2 cup of the milk. Using the whisk attachment, mix on medium speed for about four minutes or until the mixture is smooth. Scrap the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula. Blend the eggs, egg whites, vanilla and remaining milk in a separate bowl. Add the wet ingredients into the batter in three additions. Beat for two minutes on medium speed after you add, and scrape down the bowl between each addition. Divide the batter evenly between the 8 inch pans. Bake for 35-40 minutes. The layers are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow cake to cool in pans. Remove from pans and ice with your favorite buttercream, or chocolate whipped cream. Makes approximately two 8 inch round cakes.

Ingredients: For the cake: 1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 2 large eggs 1/2 cup Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa 2 cups unbleached flour 1 tablespoon cornstarch 3 tablespoons buttermilk powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup milk 12 ounce bag chocolate chips For the filling: 3 tablespoons meringue powder 1/2 cup milk 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 3/4 cup shortening (substitute 3/4 cup butter for richer flavor) Directions: For the cake: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Beat together the butter, sugar, salt and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl after each addition. Sift together the cocoa, flour, cornstarch, buttermilk powder, baking powder and baking soda. Add dry mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Beat until all ingredients are combined. Stir in the chocolate chips. Drop 1/4 cup batter on parchment lined sheets, leaving two inches between each cake. Bake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until set. Use tooth pick or cake tester to ensure center is done. Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes before removing from baking sheet. Download Recipe Card Shop/Buy Project Supplies Ask Questions/Forum How to make an edible Santa cookie plate What you are creating: An edible cookie plate to showcase the cookies left for Santa on Christmas Eve. Building Materials: The hard candies can be purchased almost anywhere! The list below is suggested candies, but you can use your imagination and come up with your own unique design. Just be sure to use candies that have a flat bottom. Brach's Star Brites Peppermint Candy Spearmint Star Light Mints Christmas Star Light Mints Spring form pan Nonstick Reynolds aluminum foil Nonstick spray Pearlized Isomalt nibs from Cakeplay (to fill in between candies) Directions: Unwrap the candies and place on a spring form pan lined with Nonstick Reynolds aluminum foil. Spray the foil with nonstick spray for extra protection against sticking. Arrange all the peppermint candies and place Isomalt nibs in between the pieces to fill in the gaps. Place in 350 degree oven until the candies melt into a solid piece (approx 3 mins). Be sure to watch it because you do not want them to bubble up, just want it to be melted and merged. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Once cooled, remove the spring form pan and place on a cookie rack. Makes one edible cookie plate. Variations: If you're feeling extremely creative, you can melt a little bit of the Isomalt nibs and take four peppermint candies and attach them using the melted Isomalt as glue. NOTE: Expect a bit of impatience from your little helpers. Rylan couldn't wait to see her finished product! My little helper Rylan was so pleased with her creation. She likes to put cookies on the plate for Santa with a side bowl of oats for the reindeer.
