Streusel Topping

Streusel topping – the ultimate crunchy, buttery, sweet sprinkle of joy that makes everything better. Whether you're topping muffins, coffee cakes, or pies, streusel adds that golden, crumbly perfection we all crave.

What's streusel topping, you ask? It's a heavenly mix of butter, sugar, and flour, sometimes jazzed up with nuts, oats, or spices. Picture this: a crisp, sweet layer that melts in your mouth and adds a killer texture to any dessert. 🤤

Why use it? Because life’s too short for boring baked goods! Streusel takes your treats from basic to boss-level, adding flavor and crunch that’ll have everyone asking for seconds.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1⁄4 cup pecans

  • 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1⁄8 cup brown sugar

  • 1⁄4 cup rolled oats

  • Pinch of salt

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces

See the Pear Apple Galette recipe for application.

Recipe Directions:

Toast the pecan in a single layer for about 7 minutes. When cooled, chop it into small pieces. In a small bowl, combine the flour with the sugar and salt. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture is coarse crumbs. Add the chopped nuts and oats. Ball the streusel into dime-sized clumps. Chill in freezer for 20 minutes.

You can add this to quick fruit bakes, pies and galettes. See the Pear Apple Galette recipe for application.

What is a Streusel topping?

Streusel topping is basically a sweet and buttery crumb topping that is often added over muffins, cakes, and pies before they are put into the oven.

What is the difference between streusel and crumble topping?

Essentially streusel and crumb topping are the same thing. They are both made with a mixture of flour, butter, and sugar. And both are used to add another layer of flavor and texture to baked goods.

What's the difference between apple crumble and streusel?

A crumble is just a crisp without oats in the streusel. It may feature nuts, but the streusel topping is usually a simple combination of butter, flour, and sugar that is clumpier than that of a crisp.
