Spider Web Cookies
Make a Halloween Spider Web Cookie using royal icing and a simple decorating technique. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a spider web design using black and white icing, a scribe tool, and a little spider decoration.
Start by flooding your sugar cookie with white royal icing. Add a black dot in the center, then pipe circles around it. Drag your scribe tool from the center outward to create the spider web pattern.
Finish your Halloween Spider Web Cookie with a small spider decoration. You can also add a sprinkle of edible diamond dust for a little sparkle.
This wet-on-wet royal icing technique is great for beginners and works well for Halloween cookie decorating.
Recipe Ingredients:
Baked sugar cookies, completely cooled
White royal icing, flood consistency
Black royal icing, flood consistency
Small edible spider decorations
Edible diamond dust (optional)
Piping bags
Scribe tool or toothpick
Recipe Directions:
Step 1: Flood Your Cookie
Using white royal icing, outline and flood your sugar cookie. Use your scribe tool to spread the icing into any gaps and smooth the surface.
Step 2: Add the Spider Web
While the white icing is still wet, pipe a small black dot in the center of your cookie.
Pipe several black circles around the center dot. Space your circles evenly, adding as many as you like.
Step 3: Create the Web Pattern
Place your scribe tool in the center of the cookie. Drag it outward through the black circles toward the edge.
Repeat around the cookie, working from the center outward each time. This creates the spider web pattern.
Wipe your scribe tool between strokes to keep the lines clean.
Step 4: Add Your Spider
Place a small edible spider decoration in the center of your web while the icing is still wet. Press lightly so it stays in place.
Step 5: Add Diamond Dust (Optional)
Allow the icing to set slightly, then sprinkle with edible diamond dust for a little sparkle. Use a product labeled edible, not decorative glitter.
Step 6: Let Your Cookies Dry
Allow your cookies to dry completely at room temperature before stacking or packaging.
Decorating Tips:
Work while your icing is wet. The black and white icing need to remain wet so your scribe tool can pull the colors together.
Use the right icing consistency. Your icing should flow smoothly and settle into a flat surface without running over the edges.
Keep your scribe tool clean. Wipe the tip after each stroke to prevent unwanted streaks.
Don't overwork the icing. One smooth stroke from the center outward creates a cleaner spider web.
